There are two parts to a first physical therapy appointment: a discussion and a physical assessment. During the discussion, your physical therapist will ask comprehensive questions about your injury or health condition, as well as your previous fitness level, your goals for treatment, and your overall health history.
The physical assessment may consist of a variety of tests, including but not limited to:
- Functional mobility assessment
- Manual palpation of the painful area
- Neurological screening tests
- Posture and gait assessments
- Range of motion (ROM) measurements
- Strength and balance tests
How To Dress For Your Physical Therapy Appointment?
Be sure to dress comfortably, including broken-in sneakers. Also make sure that your clothing allows us to easily access the painful part of your body. You might choose shorts for a knee problem or a tank top for a shoulder issue.
Finally, your physical therapist will set up your next steps. You may receive a complete, personalized treatment plan at this time, or we may wait until your second visit. You might receive instructions for at-home care, including simple exercises and ice or heat therapy. We may also recommend an assistive device such as a cane or a brace.
