Do I need a referral to see a physical therapist?

New Jersey, like all states, allows direct access to a physical therapist without a doctor’s referral. However, state law requires us to refer you to a physician if you need care outside our scope of treatment or if you do not show reasonable progress within 30 days. In addition, many insurance companies require a doctor’s referral in order to cover your treatment.
