Until recently, physical therapists were required to hold at least a master’s degree in physical therapy. Today, all physical therapists in the United States must hold a doctoral degree (DPT). State licensure requirements vary, but all physical therapists must pass the National Physical Therapy Examination and maintain continuing education requirements. Some physical therapists choose to complete a residency and perhaps a fellowship in a specialization area. Board certification is available in nine different clinical specialties.
